An opening note to bestseller Jeffrey Archer's outstanding series  informs the reader: “This is not a detective story, this is a story about a detective."

The detective being William Warwick from the author’s Clifton Chronicle. This book is the debut of the series. In this series debut, William Warwick, the protagonist has decided not to follow in his father’s footsteps and refuses to read law. Instead, he chooses the path of art history before enrolling in the police academy. After passing his entrance exams, Warwick is sent to the beat, where he garners some much needed experience under the guidance of a  copper. When he is given the chance to write the detective’s exam, he becomes succesful in the experience  and is soon assigned to Art and Antiquities because of his attention to minute details  and his past academic experiences.

Warwick has much to learn, and is also sent out to juggle a number of cases, all of which take him in different directions and has him meeting book forgers,  traffickers in stolen artwork. While not entirely won over by his son’s choices, Sir Julian Warwick QC can see the benefits of Warwick’s choices and works with him on a side project.

It seems the woman who has caught young  William Warwick’s eye has a secret she has tried to keep her herself. However, as Warwick grows fonder of Beth Rainsford, he cannot fight the urge to unravel yet another mystery.

The character of  the intelligent Warrick is ambitious but naive with a lot to learn. He’s surrounded by a distinctive set of people consisting of family, colleagues, and villains situation and also some romance. The final section deals with the courtroom dramas brings genuine suspense to the readers. The conclusion is highly gripping.

A brilliant start to what  will be a sensational series, Archer does not disappoint readers with this piece. Highly recommended to those who love Jeffrey Archer’s writing style, as well as for the readers who like a  fast-paced police procedural series .

His ability to keep the story simple and yet enthralling is something that not all authors are gifted with.  He develops such a plot and such strong characters that it keeps the readers wanting more.

The novel portrays both his personal and professional sides, it has the needed passion in each to develop a well-rounded individual who enriches us with his experiences. There are many threads left dangling and many suspenses which Archer will hopefully reveal or add to in the subsequent novels of the series. Others characters enrich the but also develop sub-plots that could emerge in future novels. The story was strong and introduced the reader to this most formidable character of William Warwick .

With this novel, Archer reinforces his position as a master storyteller.
